#43....ONLINE TV and VIDEO
I did register and take a look at JOOST. I tried to watch "Harper's Island, but it would stop and was kinda jumpy. I think this online video can be a good thing, but I am not a big movie or TV buff, so I do not know if I would take advantage of this technology. But it is nice to know that it is available...

I was actually going to give up on finishing these "Things". But with the extended finish date, I will try to take a look at the remaining "things" and at least get an idea what is available. I may not spend as much time on each project but hopefully can go back and spend more time after "Summer Reading" is over !
# 37...Photo Tales...
I loved this "Thing" as I do send out a lot of pictures to family by e-mail. I do use Picassa for all my pictures. From this "thing" I discovered "animoto". What fun...this is so cool to make a video with pictures and put music to it ! The video I added to my blog was actually family members pulling a log from the lake!! I will spend more time on my home computer working with this site. Anyone know of a site that I can download some video from my digital camera and burn to DVD or send to friends?? I would appreciate any advice in this area..

#35...Books 2.0
Wow, I could spend hours on this "Thing". Lots of good sites to look at. I do not think that the actual book will ever disappear. There is nothing like holding a book in your hands and reading it ! I certainly do not want to be reading a book on my phone! I am a member of shelfari - In the 1st round I set up a bookshelf on my blog with recently read books and books I plan to read. Of course I need to update it on a regular basis. Have received messages in my mailbox, requesting a response on the rating of the book and if it is a book that I would suggest as a "must - read". I looked at the Library organization sites, and registered at trackmine.com. This looks like a fun site. I like the reviews section, not only for books, but for movies, wine, software and a variety of items.
I thought "twitterlit" was cool, and "kidderlit". Twittering the first line of books would be a good way to get kids more involved in a "fun way". Reader's advisory was good to look at. Will spend more time on "What's next" books in series and "What should I read next" as patrons are always asking these 2 questions. Podiobooks.com will be a popular site amongst patrons. I do not have an Ipod, but if there was a site that you could download books for a minimum $$ I know it would be well used. So if their is a site for this, let us all know. I played around with the visual bookshelf on facebook. Did not even know this existed... There are so many ways to read, so no one should have an excuse, but you will always see me with the book in my hand!!!

#34...Is it a Competetion? Online answer Sites
I loved the : 100 Places to Go for Good Answers online. I bookmarked it in my "Delicious" site and will also run it off for my staff - good training sites for them.
I also read the "future of the reference desk". As our library never had a "reference desk" there will be no changes in staff. One librarian "jack of all trades". But I can definitely see the difference in "help" that is needed by students doing reports, papers etc. There is definitely more use of research on their own, on the computers. I like it when their research has to include more resources than the internet. We still find that in our small community and schools. I like the name change suggested in one of the interviews "research help desk".
I also read Librarian 2.0 - Interviews of the future of libraries. The interview by Laura Solomon was very interesting. "Holds being delivered to your front door"?? Are people really getting that "lazy"? I do see that we need a better way to "market our libraries". And I don't think it should be locally, but state wide..
I took a look at "answer bag"..some pretty ridiculous questions. It looks like a waste of valuable time taken to answer some of these questions.
So I see this hurting libraries? Yes, but there is so much more available in libraries than just the "reference desk". That's why marketing is so important!!!!

I attended the "Teen Services" workshop in Marshall sponsored by Sammie on Monday April 20. The speaker covered items such as "staffing and time", 'teen support", "community support" and "$$money$$". She also covered what worked in her library and what did not work. The best advice was: "Don't be afraid to start small and dream big"... "be realistic"... and "don't expect overnight results". Involve the teens. Every library should have a "teen advisory board". This will be one of my main goals!!!
Thanks Sammie for sponsoring this workshop...

#33....Travel 2.0
This was a very fun "Thing". Now I understand google maps a little more, as the sites that I looked at
"showed google maps". What is travel 2.0? To make it simple it is "travel information sites".
I know if I ever go on a fantastic out of the country trip...I will set up a travel blog-My Life of Travel- what a great way to keep your family informed of your travels without having to make phone calls. I did follow Eric Perkins (Kare 11) blog when he was at the winter Olympics. Very interesting!!
I also looked at gusto.com. This is also a good site..I looked at the Las Vegas travel guide on this site as we spent a week in Las Vegas in January. You could look at people ratings of restaurants, attractions, night life, landmarks, shopping etc.
Take a look at "notes from the road" if only to see the beautiful pictures. "Green routes" is easy to use..all you need to do is fill in the city you are interested in visiting. Of course I had to look at ..fastfoodmaps.com.
You can pinpoint where the fast food restaurants such as Mcdonalds, Burger King, Hardees etc. by city and state. This site also has.. caffeinemaps.com. Did you know there are 10,709 Starbucks locations in the U.S as of July 2008? Everyone should look at these sites before venturing out on their travels...good info!

#32....Google Maps
I must admit that I do not like working with Google maps...I tried for at least 2 hours to add a map to my blog and it would not work for me. I have had an experience with google maps, as a friend of mine sent me a google map of a marina that he has his sailboat in, not far from the San Diego airport. We were flying out to visit him, so he gave us the directions on google earth from the airport to the marina, where we were to meet him.
When I have the time I will take a look at it again and see what I am doing wrong... But need to get onto the next "Thing".

#31...More: Twitter
Do I need more "networking" ...phone, email, blog and now Twitter. I did set up a Twitter account, but once again I have not taken it any further. I do enjoy reading and learning about all these "gadgets" . After reading the info on Twitter, I now can relate to people when they talk about "Twitter" I wanted to read "9 ways Twitter can help you in the real world", but could not access that page. I also took a look at Tweet Congress, thinking this would be interesting, but found out that the Senator and Representative from my area are not "Twittering"...
Also the "Follow the Whitehouse" page does not exist. I will put the Twitter gadget on my iGoogle page, as I do have 1 "follower". I looked at the "Twitter yellow pages, and maybe someday when I am looking for some more "followers" I will look for someone with my interests and hobbies. I started to take the quiz "what punctuation mark are you" but when it asked for my cell phone #, that is as far as I went because I do not want telemarketers calling me, as I am sure that would happen!!! So..I quess this is what I think of "Twitter", right now it is not a priority, but is nice to know what the word "Twitter" means. I did add the tag "What exactly is the point of Twitter" to my delicious gadget, as I thought this article was quite interesting.

#30... More Ways to Use RSS and Delicious
I must admit I am not really into RSS feeds. It is a simple tool but takes time and commitment. I did previously set up some RSS feeds, but do not follow them regularly. I looked at ZapTXT, and this would be a good tool as you can get notifications in your e-mail etc. on the updates of your feeds. I did not register at this time as I feel I need to be more committed. "Share your Feeds" ? Turn your favorite feeds into a personal magazine?? Now this would call for dedication. You would have to be a big RSS user to be able to do this. I would never accomplish this task, but it would be interesting to be able to follow someone who has gone this far.... HAPPY RSS DAY TO ALL ON MAY 1....
Del.icio.us....
I tryed to register in the last round, but did not succeed. So..I went back and tryed it again and I did succeed!!
I watched the video "Networking with Del.icio.us and read "The Several Habits of Wildly Successful del.icio.us Users. They have a lot of good tips, but it is all confusing until you actually start "messing" around with it. I did finally bookmark a couple sites and put them on my igoogle page. Haven't succeeded in putting any bookmarks on my blog yet. Haven't really figured how, but will continue to work on this and start hopefully do some social bookmarking. I did add the del.icio.us badge to my blog, but do not have any added bookmarks yet!!

#29...Google Tools
I explored some of the tools...I did not realize there were so many different tools to use. Be careful when you sign up for "alerts". I put in "favorite authors" which isn't so bad, but I also put out an alert for new DVD's being released. I think in 1 day I received about 50 alerts!!! So I canceled that one... I watched the Goog 411, but that doesn't sound too legit to me, so I will pass on that. Another of the interesting tools is "Google Book Search", shows reviews of all kinds of books, you can read magazines etc. This I think I will use often. Another little tool which is new is the 'emotican button", you can add a little humor to your emails. Very interesting tools if you want to spend time using them!!

#28...Customized Home Pages
I have always had a iGoogle homepage. It has all gadgets that I use available such as: Hotmail, Gmail, facebook, & Blogger. I have added these gadgets to my page, plus local weather, google calendar, Rss feeds, and uploaded family pictures. I did try to set up a netvibes page, just to see if I would like it. I had no success as the page kept freezing up on me. So I could not get anywhere. I may take a look at pageflakes, to see how it would compare with iGoogle. But I have a gmail account, so I do not have to set up another username and password to see my iGoogle page. All these passwords and usernames, how do we remember all of them?? I enjoy iGoogle, and it is easy to use, so I will stick with it. I did not realize there were so many different homepage sites available. I like simple and that is what iGoogle is....

#27...Twitter
I was really going to give up on signing up for Twitter, after reading all the nasty comments, and it took me a super long time to come up with a username that was not being used!!! Finally decided on the city where the family cabin is....surprise it was "available" . This is much like Facebook where you can fill in "what are you doing". I did add this to my Blog, so I imagine if I play around with it, I may see some good to it. Now to only find the time to keep up on all these sights..

#26....Join the Ning
I did join the Ning in the second round. This is something that will be very interesting to comment on and communicate with other people in the group. I now belong to the Pioneerland Library System group.
I did change my theme page, uploaded a photo and updated my profile. I also uploaded the Ning badge on my blog.

#25....Bloggers Toolkit
Wow just spent 2 hours going through the toolkit. After reading all this, I definitely need to update my blog, and add some new widgets etc. Although I do not like a "cluttered" blog so I will try to stay away from that. I will set up "post via e-mail". I watched the "widget videos" and did not realize there were so many different gadgets that could be added. I do have a "google homepage" that I add and remove gadgets. I already use flickr, picture trail and picassa for my picture albums...I like the idea of presenting ideas visually and keeping posts short..so better get to work updating my blog.
